Luxembourg Day 1

Today we went to a whirlwind of memorial. Some of them were in Belgium and some where in Luxembourg. We began with a few items in the town of St. Vith. Most of the memorials were simple, usually a small statue or stone with a plaque documenting what happened. We choose this city because is was along the route of the allied advance and basically the starting point of the Battle of the Bulge. After that we went to Malmadey and saw the site of the Malmadey massacre. This was where the Germans SS troops shot a bunch of American prisoners. One key thing that I noticed about the memorials there was the presence of the 5 point star. There were also a few smaller memorials for other soldiers and civilians killed in the town. Our last stop of the day was Bastone. This was the site where the 101 Airborne held against the brunt of the German offensive at the Battle of the Bulge. It was also on the route General Patton took to conquere Germany. At Bastone, there was the most impressive memorial to the Allied troops that I have seen. It is a massive 5 pointed star with a list of the 50 states, the various military units, and the accomplishments of those units. You could also walk on top of the monument and see for miles from the top. Unlike the other days, we had a tour guide on the bus with us. He was one of the funniest people that I have seen in a long time. That was a really long day. We finished off the night with a small get together in my room and split a couple champagnes with a group of friends.
